How Distressed Grain Is Remarketed
Grain in poor condition is not one product. It is a set of fractions with different values and different lawful destinations.

Distressed grain cases follow a pattern. A parcel arrives with wet, heated, mould-affected or insect-affected material, often confined to part of the stow. The receiver rejects the whole parcel. The commercial task is to establish what proportion is genuinely affected and where each fraction can lawfully go.
Evidence comes first
- Moisture distribution across holds and depth
- Damage percentage and whether affected material is segregable at discharge
- Mycotoxin analysis, where relevant to the commodity and destination
- Insect activity and whether fumigation is a viable remedy
- Odour, colour and germination where these affect the intended use
Segregation changes the economics
Where affected material can be separated during discharge, a large part of the parcel may remain saleable in its original channel at a modest discount, and only the affected fraction needs an alternative route. Where segregation is impossible, the whole parcel takes the value of its worst component. This single operational question often moves the outcome more than any negotiation.
Alternative destinations
Depending on analysis and jurisdiction, alternative routes may include processing, industrial applications, or markets in another country where the product remains lawfully usable. Every one of these depends on regulatory approval in the receiving jurisdiction.
No feed use should be assumed. Suitability for animal feed is a regulatory determination based on laboratory evidence and the rules of the destination country, and it must be established before the cargo is offered on that basis.
Speed and vessel economics
Grain deteriorates. A parcel that could have been segregated on arrival may be uniformly affected three weeks later. In practice the remarketing window is short, and the value lost through delay usually exceeds the value gained by waiting for a better offer.
Complex cases requiring direct cargo purchase, international remarketing or physical commercial recovery may be referred for human assessment by Pommer & Partners.
